Creating Small Habits to Reach Big Goals

Picture
Are you trying to implement some new, healthy habit into your life?  If you are like most of us, the new desired activity may last a day or two or even a week or two only to fall to the wayside and we are back into our old behavior.  It is a universal, human problem!  Our brains naturally want to keep doing the same thing. We have created ruts in our neural pathways, much like a dog creates a worn path around his perimeter.  In order to overcome and get out of our ruts we have to be proactive. Creating small habits to reach the bigger goal, one step at a time is very effective. When we break down the "big picture" into smaller frames, we create a road to success.
Try this simple method to get you out of your rut and on to new things!

Goal Example: Healthy Lifestyle (big and undefined goal)  Break it down one small habit at a time.

A new small habit to help get me to the bigger goal:

Drink more water

So now that we have a smaller more manageable goal (tiny habit) we need to tie it to a trigger, something that you do everyday.   And then after you accomplish the new habit, celebrate with saying out loud "Great Job!"  or "I'm Awesome"  (I know it's corny but it works!)
Use this simple format:  You can fill in the blanks with whatever habit you want to create (as long it is small)!  Remember we are breaking down big goals into small, doable steps!

After I :                                 walk downstairs in the morning
I will:                                    fill my water bottle
Then I celebrate with:        I am awesome!

You will find that because of the very fact that you tied the desired action to something you do everyday, it becomes easy to stay with it.  Celebrating afterwards reinforces our brains to continue the activity!  Super simple!

If you try this method, I would love to hear how it went.  Just comment in the space below!

Letting Go and Accepting What Is

Picture

Life in Spain has been a wonderful journey. I have never lived outside the Pacific Northwest and I didn't know what to expect. But one thing I did know for sure....everything always works out for the best. The Universe is in my favor and always has "my back". Just as It does for everyone who chooses to harness the love creation has for its own. Life at home in Lake Stevens, WA was going pretty awesome. I had my own fitness business of over 15 years, people coming to my private home studio, classes to go teach so I wouldn't get bored always being at home, friends, and family close by that I love. So fast forward almost a year and here I am on the other side of the world, not knowing how things would unfold, just knowing that they will. Life always continues on. So the optimist that I am, I chose to first believe and then create the life I want here. I have found wonderful friends, a fulfilling job teaching yoga and personal training, and I'm still my own boss, our home is so beautiful home that when people walk into our space they are in awe of the tranquilness of it. Every morning I get up I meditate outside, listening to the birds welcoming the morning. I LOVE MY SPACE! Life is perfect... Which leads me to my personal learning lesson of the day.
I recently started up a couple yoga classes on my beautiful patio at home by the pool. It's the perfect place for a zenful practice. Friends are coming, I am making money, everything is awesome! Then, the pounding starts...yesterday they began construction of a new home right next door! Literally 10 feet from me. in a lot where no one lived, soon there will be a brand new home! My initial response was to try to control this, maybe I can talk to the construction workers (they only speak Spanish), ask them to take a break during class. I could find out the laws on construction noise just in case they don't comply to my requests I will make sure they comply with the construction noise rules in neighborhoods, (which I'm pretty sure they are starting too early and ending too late). There are strict guidelines for that you know. I even walked down to the police station this morning to ask what the law is,  (they couldn't tell me, they are national not local). All these thoughts were whirling around my head, I was feeling uptight, then I suddenly realize that I have forgotten that the Universe is rigged in my favor! Time to LET GO of my expectations of how that is supposed to look. I can't argue with Creation. So, instead of "working it", I canceled my home classes. Anyway, we were just going to see how they flew, let it be a casual get together (how did I forget that). I mean, if I were building a house in my neighborhood, I would be pretty excited! Who am I to disrupt that progress? The moment I put out on FB that class will be postponed until further notice, my peace came back to me.
Lesson Learned - Don't forget that life is awesome! Don't forget that my thoughts determine my outlook on life and ultimately determine my happiness. Even my cat is learning this. He thought the next door lot was his personal playground. He calmed down when he felt my calmness. Funny how an attitude of peace and tranquility is contagious.
